Grinelda the Mad Hatter Review

I’m going to have to be honest before starting this book review. It is a bit biased. Grinelda the Mad Hatter was illustrated by my mom, Paula Nathan. At the same time it is a tremendous book that delves into the life of an amazing little girl named Grinelda.

Grinelda does not act like other girls her age. While the other girls like to play with conscience and would talk amongst themselves Grinelda would sit by herself and wear hats.

Actually just wearing hats would be an understatement, because Grinelda did not only wear hats, she also makes them. So while the other kids would pretend to be princesses who should get whatever they wanted, Grinelda instead dreamed of new hats to make and to wear.

Grinelda had the courage to be herself and see that she did not have to be a princess like all the other girls, but could be a hat maker if she chose. She learned the value of being an individual at an early age. It is a lesson that many could benefit from in today’s cookie cutter society.

While this is a story for children it could also be for adults. All of us needs to embrace who we are and this book shows how extraordinary dreams can lead to extraordinary lives. For all the children who are laughed at in the playground, for all the children who were bullied after school, and for all those teenagers who felt they were not like their friends this book is for them. There is a mad Hatter in all of us waiting to get out.
