A Horse Personified

Have you ever noticed that many children’s books personify inanimate objects and give voices to animals, making them human like? Perhaps, this is a good thing, because it gives kids a sense of respect for things and empathy for animals. And this is a good thing. Even better is the fact that it lights up the child’s imagination and they really love these types of books.

Well, I have a most excellent book recommendation for your child around the ages of first or second grade. It is a wonderful book, not too difficult and beautifully illustrated. The book is:

“Robert the Rose Horse” by Joan Heilbroner; Illustrated by P.D. Eastman; Random House, New York; 1962 [renewed 1990].

This book is part of the Dr Suess series; “I can read it all by myself” which is geared towards teaching kids to read. This book is about a horse named Robert, who is a horse who loves roses. Many people love roses so why not a horse I ask? Unfortunately, every time Robert sees a rose he cannot resist and goes for it. But then it makes him sneeze and this causes all sorts of problems you see.

After causing problems throughout the city Robert decides to join the police department as a deputy horse. When he sees some bank robbers he gives chase, but is distracted by a little rose on top of a girls head. He stops to sniff the rose and then sneezes blowing over the bank robbers and saving the day. What a wonderful story indeed. What a great children’s book to own.
