Graphic novels are all the rage these days. Some of the most popular ones feature superheroes and boys as main characters. But where are all the girls? Here are three graphic novel series that girls love.
What are graphic novels? Basically, a book with lots of pictures. Until recently, that meant only picture books for young children, or comics. But nowadays, you can find textbooks, adventures, mysteries, just about any genre represented in a graphic novel.
Some take on the form of a comic book style. Others, like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, are like journals. Some kind of mix the two, incorporating a journal with comic books, like in the Captain Underpants series.
But we were talking about girls, and the first one is Ellie McDoodle. Ellie loves to sketch, and she records her latest activities and thoughts in her books. The first of the series, Ellie McDoodle: Have Pen, Will Travel finds her on a camping trip with some relatives she doesn’t know very well.
Every single page of the book has at least one, and usually multiple, sketches on them. She even tells you how to play a few games, including Spoons, which made me remember doing so when I was a kid.
Her cousin, Eric, whom she calls “Er-ick!” also plays an important role. She doesn’t get along with him very well. He’s a typical pesky boy. Her monkey-boy brother irritates her, and she is uncomfortable having to hang around with her boring aunt and uncle, too.
Kids really relate to her adventures. They can understand how she feels and will laugh at and enjoy reading about the things that happen to her.
The next girl journalist is Amelia. She has an entire series of notebooks, all with the same black and white composition book type of cover. Like Ellie, she records her experiences and thoughts, but these are larger books, thinner, with full color illustrations.
Just Grace is yet another feisty and fun girl who draws and writes, although her books has far fewer pictures than the other two series. But she has a great sense of humor and enjoys helping others. In this case, her scary neighbor’s cat goes missing, and she is determined to help. Kids who like mystery and cats especially love this series.
So if your girls are feeling a bit left out of the graphic novel genre, those are three graphic novel series that feature girls. I guarantee that they will enjoy reading and viewing their journals and sketchbooks and get a good laugh or more in the process.
