A good leader knows himself and he knows each member of the team. Of course, it’s not easy being a great leader, however if this is what you aspire to there is a very good book I’d certainly like you to read. The name of the book is;
“How to Be a Successful Leader-Practical Techniques That Will Help You Perfect Your Qualities Leadership” by Auren Uris, 1953.
The author first makes the point that you need to be sensitive to the potential of your people. You need to trust them, and be able to delegate, often letting them make mistakes, but also believing in them, without micromanagement. The author admits that leadership is not easy, and there are really very few good leaders out there. And although the book was written in 1953, and we are talking well over five decades ago, I think the same thing holds true, we have lots of people posing as leaders, but very few good ones.
The author explains the complex emotional network of a leader, and how their groups are made up; and considers all the members of the group. How the members of the group complement each other, or compete with each other. And all the issues of the leader himself, as the author makes a point that the members of the group are looking towards the leader for a direction to focus their energy, and praise for work satisfaction as they accomplish tasks and do well, or try their best. Members of the group are also looking for personal growth, and they like to be recognized as they get better.
The author then focuses on the leader himself, and what he is looking for such as; a sense of achievement, even emotional satisfaction of winning, and even prestige to satisfy his ego. It is interesting that in a political correct world of today people would decry the reality behind a great leader, and their egocentric attitude yet, if we deny that we also make a mistake.
The author also suggests testing your leadership and tailoring your telling technique to what works best with your group. Indeed, I think you’ll very much like this book is much as I did, and I believe you should have a copy in your personal business library, so I hope you will please consider all this.
