Many people are inspired by the famous book The Art of War. Its wisdom has helped many people succeed in different fields in life that in many cases are unrelated to actual warfare. It seems that the tactics in it are universal and extremely powerful. We all know a lot about the book, but there is very little known about its author. The Sun Tzu biography is heroic, but there are a lot of details missing. Still, it is interesting to know more about the life of the famous general.
He was born in China in its Spring and Autumn Period which lasted from 722 to 481. This is what the ancient sources state. It is believed that he came from the minor nobility, but managed to get good education. It is still not clear when, how and why he wrote his famous treatise The Art of War.
It is thought that Sun Tzu was a talented military man who rose to general. He served the king of Wu – Helü. The general led his army into many battles and showed great heroism. His numerous victories then inspired him to describe his strategies and tactics in a treatise.
There is yet another version of the story. Some believe that Sun Tzu decided to present the tactics and strategies he had invented so that he can become general. The king was impressed by his ideas and appointed him to train the army and lead it in battles. After becoming general Sun Tzu expanded his treatise adding more of his brilliant warfare strategies.
One thing that we know for sure is that the theories in The Art of War proved to be effective. The Sun Tzu biography shows that he had a successful military career and many followers. One of his descendants Sun Bin also devoted his life to studying and devising war tactics.
