Marked - A House of Night Novel by PC Cast and Kristin Cast

P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast, mother and daughter, have written a delightful vampyre story aimed at teens. But “Marked: A House of Night Novel” is a book that can be enjoyed by all ages. The trials and tribulations of growing up are presented in the context of a vampire society that is new and original. There are lessons to be learned, but they are woven into a thoroughly entertaining story.

It’s been a rough week for sixteen year old Zoey Redbird and unfortunately it’s not going to get any better. She just wants to fit in, but to her shock, fitting in means getting marked for a spot at the House of Night, a school for fledgling vampyres. Zoey leaves behind her ex-boyfriend, a failing grade in geometry and the step-loser who married her mother. But her new life isn’t so bad after all. She makes some loyal friends and catches the eye of the cutest boy at school. Now if she can only survive the change, maybe she’ll fit in at last.

It’s always refreshing to find a different take on the traditional vampire story. In this world vampyrism is accepted and fledgling vampyres are trained at a special school. Zoey is a dynamic and spunky heroine. She tells her own story in an amusing and realistic voice. She may be a vampyre but Zoey has the same problems that every teenager faces. It’s easy to relate to her. And she’s surrounded by secondary characters that are just as engaging, including a grandmother who is Native American. The dialogue is sharp and the references to real people and pop culture add to the story. Adult readers will find themselves thinking about their own teenage years. Although geared to young adults there is some suggestive language. Unanswered questions remain at the conclusion but this is only the beginning of a highly addictive series. Reading Level: Young Adult Publisher: St. Martin’s Griffin; 1st edition (May 1, 2007) ISBN: 978-0-312-36026-9 Paperback: Pages 320 Price: $8.95
